Today, wearing the hook facing inward indicates the wearer`s heart is taken, while facing outward signifies they are single.
Though an ancient regional custom, the modern silver and gold design was commercialized on St. Croix in the 1960s, turning it into an iconic piece of Virgin Islands heritage.
